9. Use your own words to summarize the events surrounding Old Lady Rong on pgs 81-85.


Ans. She felt really lonely because her young children were in Hong-Kong where they were continuing to exploit the Chinese people.


10. What does the sound of drums and gongs mean in Ji-Li’s life?


Ans. This meant that The Red Guards were ransacking the houses of class enemies (rightists) to find and confiscate their hoarded possesions. Pg- 80-81


11. Who is Song-Po-Po? How does her leaving Ji-Li’s home affect Ji-Li’s life?


Ans-Song-Po-Po is their nanny and took care of Ji-Li, her brother and sister from the time they were born. It affects her by that her classmates tell her that you have a servant in your house and you are not being equal. (accepted as being a rightist)


12. What is a dowry? What items did Grandmother have left from her dowry? What does Ji-Li’s mother do with their ancestors’ clothes? Why does she do that?


Ans- A dowry is goods, property, clothes given as a gift upon her marriage from her husband. Ji-Li’s grandmother had neck ties, golden cloth, pearls, ponies and phoenixes on a gown and many more stuff. Ji-Li mother makes quilts and mobs by the ancestors’ clothes. She was doing this because she was scared that red guards would come and take away them by their thinking of Ji-Li’s family being a rightist.
